The Port of Lamu is a world-class maritime facility built to modern global standards and equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure.


As a key component of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor, the Port of Lamu is a transformative hub for regional trade that integrates road networks, Standard Gauge Railway, International Airport, Resort cities, Oil pipeline and refinery.


It features natural depths of 17 meters along the main channel, extending to 60 meters at the bay ensuring seamless access for large vessels. The port can be accessed through the Southern Channel accommodating vessels of a draught of 12.5 metres and below and the Eastern Channel of 17 metres and above.


The port’s first three berths with a quay length of 400 metres each are currently operational, capable of effortlessly servicing Panamax and Post-Panamax vessels with capacities exceeding 10,000 TEUs. Lamu has an annual capacity of 1.2 million TEUs.


With its strategic position along major global shipping routes, the Port of Lamu is set to become Africa’s leading deep-water transshipment hub, efficiently connecting cargo flows across the continent. Once complete the port will have a total of 23 berths handling containerized, conventional and petroleum products.
