Port Of Kisumu

The Lake Port

The Port of Kisumu is the largest lake port in East Africa region and a key transit hub for cargo transportation across Lake Victoria.

The port offers a critical link in an integrated East African rail and water transportation system connecting Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania with a focus on petroleum and conventional cargo.

The port has four berths with a quay length of 400 metres and draught of 4 metres, a linkspan for the berthing of wagon ferries, and an oil jetty that serves oil tankers.

Additional infrastructure is currently being developed to enhance the capacity and efficiency of the inland waterway port which has seen cargo volumes growing exponentially to top 350,000 metric tons in 2025 from 25,000 metric tons since the process of rehabilitation begun in 2018.

The impressive growth of the port can be attributed to several factors ranging from the revitalization and modernization efforts, berths upgrading and the Kisumu/Nairobi MGR line railway links, all aimed at boosting operational efficiency and streamlining cargo movement.

With ongoing infrastructure projects, including construction of the storage facilities, a passenger terminal, and modern cargo handling equipment, are set to increase Kisumu Port's capacity for future growth.
