The Shimoni Fish Port officially handed over to KPA

The newly constructed Shimoni Fish Port facility has officially been handed over to Kenya Ports Authority following successful completion by the contractor M/s. Southern Engineering Company (SECO).

Managing Director Captain William Ruto led top management in taking delivery of the 2.6 billion shillings project, which commenced on 1st October 2022. The port facility is equipped with modern facilities for vessels landing, fish processing, and cold storage is expected to bolster the fisheries value chain.

Captain Ruto said the Fish Port represents a unique strategic shift of the Authority's approach to port operations, diversifying beyond cargo handling to focus on specialized fisheries infrastructure. He added that the port   will generate employment opportunities and boost local economic growth in the region.

He noted that the Authority is committed to promoting efficient port operations to facilitate both regional integration and international trade. We are therefore keen in focusing on investing in port infrastructure to boost efficiency and service delivery.

“The journey towards exploiting blue economy has started and I am proud that a Kenyan firm and consultant have delivered a very good project whose feasibility study commenced way back in 2017," he added.

The Managing Director commended the Authority's engineers and technical team for ensuring professional supervision throughout the construction period. He thanked the stakeholders for turning up to witness the handing over of the new port from the contractor to Kenya Ports Authority awaiting official commissioning later.

The modern port dedicated solely to fish production, processing and value addition will transform the local economy, increasing opportunities for the exportation of the finished products to the region as well as local consumption. Key infrastructure under the project includes a jetty measuring 75-meter by 30-meter and a 135-meter causeway capable of berthing two fishing vessels simultaneously.Shimoni MD.jpg

Additional critical facilities at the port include a dedicated fish processing plant, cold storage units, reefer stations, a power substation, an ice-making plant, a bio-digester, and wastewater management system.

The Shimoni Fish Port is poised to transform the region's fishing industry by improving efficiency, reducing post-harvest losses, and creating new economic opportunities.
