Construction of Shimoni Port to begin in April

The Authority has confirmed its preparedness for the construction of the first phase of Shimoni Fishing Port which will commence in the next one month.

 Speaking on Friday at the Kwale County headquarters at a meeting with Kwale Governor H.E Hon. Salim Mvurya, KPA acting Managing Director Amb. John Mwangemi said the groundbreaking ceremony for the project is scheduled for April this year.

He added that Kshs 2.6 billion has been set aside for the project which is expected to be completed within a period of 24 months after its commencement.

 Amb. Mwangemi termed the project beneficial not only to Kwale County but to the entire nation adding that it would come with diverse economic opportunities.

The key components of the project according to KPA’s General Manager Infrastructure Development Eng. Vincent Sidai include construction of a jetty parallel to the existing one, refurbishment of current offices, construction of the yard, cold storage facilities and construction of a fish market.

 In undertaking the project, the current jetty was spared to avoid economic and social disruptions of livelihoods.

 Addressing the meeting, Governor Mvurya reiterated his Government’s commitment in supporting and ensuring successful implementation of the project which he said upon completion would be a game-changer to the economies of the entire region.

“As a County Government we are in full support of the Shimoni Port project which we had recognized in our County Integrated Plan in 2013,” he said.

 The Governor expressed gratitude to H.E President Uhuru Kenyatta saying the head of state was personally committed to the Shimoni Port project.

 Kwale Deputy Governor Hon. Fatuma Achani, Acting County Secretary Ms. Sylvia Chidodo, CEC member Water Mr. Martin Kuya, CEC member Roads Mr. Hemedi Mwabudzo, CEC member Lands Ms. Saumu Beja and CEC member Agriculture Ms. Joan Nyamasio were present during the meeting which was also attended by the Kwale County Commissioner Mr. Gideon Oyagi.
