KPA unveils Malaba Marshalling Yard

The Authority has embarked on the process of constructing a truck marshalling yard at the Malaba border in Busia County to eradicate the incessant heavy traffic congestion along the highway.

KPA acting Managing Director Amb. John Mwangemi unveiled plans for the project which is estimated to cost Kshs 1.81 billion.

He reiterated the Authority’s commitment towards facilitating trade and offering a permanent solution to conquer the heavy traffic gridlock which is witnessed at the Malaba border extending to approximately 50 km towards Bungoma.

Amb. Mwangemi added that the anticipated marshalling yard’s facilities will include an administration block, a welfare center, ablution block, a clinic, boundary wall and security gate. A design drawing of the pavement of the yard has also been produced.

The clinic shall offer the mandatory COVID-19 pandemic testing which shall also be undertaken in liaison with the Ugandan medical personnel.

Upon completion, the marshalling yard will remove the trucks from the road, improve efficiency at the border point while improving the welfare of the drivers.

The MD who was accompanied by General Managers Eng. Vincent Sidai and Capt. William Ruto of Infrastructure Development and Kisumu Port respectively, toured the 22 -acre piece of land owned by the Authority to confirm the project’s viability and also ensure there’s no encroachment on the land.

The terrain at the plot is flat with a gentle slope at its southern tip. There is a plantation of mature eucalyptus trees ready for harvesting.

Teso Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Peter Karanja, Samia Deputy County Commissioner Ms. Esther Kungu. Eng. Paul Atelu (in charge of roads), Dr Osia Mwanje (County Executive Committee member for agriculture and water) and Mr. George Okwara (County Executive Committee member in charge of infrastructure and energy) were also present.

Earlier the MD toured the small ports of Victoria and Sio where the local provincial administration, County Government Executives and the community assured the Authority of utmost cooperation during the planned port developments.
