The Authority's Key Achievements 
 
•    Improved financial performance – an operating profit,a stable cash flow,reserves and tax compliance.
•    Between 2002 and 2006,the port of Mombasa has seen an increase of about 4 million tons in total cargo throughout. From 10.2 million tons of cargo handled in 2002,the port handled over 14.4 million tons in 2006: a 40% growth in the five years.
•    Modernization of Port facilities and operations to handle increased traffic and to enhance efficiency.
•    KPA has made significant strides to automate key port services. The Authority’s IT strategy is driven by its vision to be rated amongst the top twenty ports in the world in terms of reputation and performance by the year 2010. To achieve this KPA adopted a fully integrated IT strategy in 2001 that encompasses Enterprise Resource Planning Systems,Water Front System and Community Based System all web enabled.
•    Establishment of inland container depots in Nairobi and Kisumu and liaison marketing office in Kampala to take services closer to the customer.
•    To be more responsive to customers’ demands and keep abreast with global shipping trends the Kenya Ports Authority has teamed up with other key stakeholders to offer 24 hour service at the port of Mombasa.
•    KPA is constantly updating its safety and security measures at Mombasa port to safeguard international trade. The authority is compliant with the international ship and port facility security (ISPS) code which entails:
a)    Implementation of an integrated security system improvement programme to address electronic access controls,surveillance and detection.
b)    Training of port security staff on maritime security modules.
c)    Preparation of port security procedures and guidelines among others.
•    Holding of regular consultative meetings with port customers and other stakeholders.
•    KPA has enhanced efficiency in customer service by reducing lengthy cargo documentation procedures to bare minimum. All these processes are now carried out in a one – stop centre which houses all the stakeholders involved in cargo clearing and documentation.
•    To contain pollution,KPA has invested in highly trained manpower and expensive equipment to manage oil spills,garbage and waste dumping which remains the biggest threat to port environment.
•    To restore integrity and good governance,the authority has put in place an anti- corruption programme whose main objective is to develop a business culture based on credibility,integrity and trust by creating awareness on the negative aspects of ethical misconduct.
